ABOUT THE NELSON MANDELA FOUNDATION : We are a non-profit organisation focused on dialogue and advocacy, and memory and legacy work, founded by Nelson Mandela in 1999. We are the custodian of his life and times; we are a committed facilitator of his living legacy; and we are mandated to promote his lifelong vision of freedom and equality for all.
WHAT WE DO : The Nelson Mandela Foundation focuses its work on promoting dialogue as a vital instrument for addressing critical social issues and the most effective vehicle for sharing and growing memory, and for engaging it in the promotion of justice and social cohesion. This work is an attempt to find sustainable solutions to these critical social issues. The Foundation also works to ensure the people of the world have access to an integrated, dynamic and trusted resource on Nelson Mandela's legacy.
WHY WE DO IT : Our vision, like that of our founder Nelson Mandela and the movement he spearheaded, is to contribute to the making of a just society that remembers its past, listens to all voices, and pursues social justice for all.
ABOUT NELSON MANDELA SQUARE
Whilst Nelson Mandela Square is positioned as a luxurious lifestyle destination, celebrating fine living and old-world splendour and sophistication, we are also inspired to play an important role in community development. To this end, we implement a meaningful Corporate Social Responsibility Programme that recognises specific social issues and speaks to the emotional language of the Nelson Mandela Square brand. Part of this drive is the investment we make in the uplifting of our surrounding communities. We have selected several outreach programmes within the nearby Alexandra Township as our charities of choice. It is difficult not to be impressed by this awe-inspiring work of art, which has become a tourist attraction in its own right and a popular Kodak moment.
Nelson Mandela Square is one of the largest open public spaces in the country, comprising over 66 exclusive retailers, and surrounded by sidewalk cafés, fine restaurants and three of Johannesburg’s 5-star hotels. Visited on average by over one million local and international patrons a month, the physical square 1 000m2 (10 700ft2) serves as a stage for a host of discerning local and international events, including concerts, fashion shows, exhibitions, sporting events and production launches. It is also a regular film location and popular backdrop used by advertising agencies and production companies. The 6m statue was donated by anonymous international donors and constructed using a computer graphic technique. Local sculptors Jacob Maponyane and Kobus Hattingh made this concept a reality.
